Getting the winter blues isn’t just a simple turn of phrase; it’s a real medical condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that often occurs during the gloomy months of the winter season. However, it appears that seniors suffering from depression may also benefit from the same therapy that has helped those with the disorder.
Sufferers of SAD are often prescribed light therapy, which consists of daily sessions in front of a special therapeutic blue light, and in many cases has been proven to be effective enough to eliminate the need for medication. Studies have shown that seniors undoubtedly benefit from the same therapy, regardless of the season, and could potentially provide the aging patient an alternative to anti-depressants (although light therapy could also serve as an “add-on” to enhance currently prescribed drugs).
Another observed side-benefit of light therapy for seniors is increased levels of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin at night, and a drop-off of the stress hormone cortisol.
Starting light therapy can be as simple as buying a special light panel online or at the drugstore, however the study requires more thorough testing to be proven valid. In addition, depression in seniors should never be self-treated: a certified doctor should always be consulted as soon as your loved one shows any symptoms.
